  • February 26, 2025

The recently published article in the Economic Times finds that “Overall employability of Indian graduates dipped slightly in 2024, although proficiency in AI and ML roles improved. Increasing expectations for technical and soft skills resulted in a marginal decline, with non-technical skills requiring more development time. It also says that – increasing expectations from new talent – amid an increase in demand for graduates with a mix of technical and non-technical including soft skills such as learning agility and adaptability – resulted in a marginal decline in the employability of Indian graduates to 42.6% in 2024 from 44.3% in the previous year.”

In part 2, we will explore Adaptability.

What is Adaptability?

Adaptability is the ability to adjust to new conditions, environments, or challenges with ease and effectiveness. It involves being flexible and open-minded, willing to learn and unlearn, and maintaining a positive attitude toward change. In the current job market, adaptability is important for both graduates and professionals as it helps them navigate uncertainty, take advantage of new opportunities, and stay relevant in their careers.

For example, consider a software developer who has primarily worked with one programming language. When their company adopts a new technology stack, an adaptable developer will quickly learn the new language and tools, ensuring they continue to contribute effectively to their team. This demonstrates their willingness to embrace change and commitment to continuous growth.

Another example is a marketing professional who encounters a significant shift in consumer behavior due to a global event, such as a pandemic. Instead of sticking to outdated strategies, an adaptable marketer will pivot to new methods, like leveraging digital platforms and virtual events to engage customers. This ability to adapt ensures the success of their campaigns and highlights their resilience and proactive approach to problem-solving.

Why Adaptability is important?

Adaptability is crucial for success in today’s fast-paced world. Here are three key reasons why:

  1. Staying Relevant: In rapidly evolving industries, adaptability allows professionals to stay current with new technologies and trends. For example, a graphic designer who learns to use the latest design software can produce more innovative and competitive work, ensuring their skills remain in demand.
  2. Overcoming Challenges: Adaptability enables individuals to navigate unexpected obstacles with resilience. For instance, during the COVID-19 pandemic, many educators transitioned to online teaching. Those who adapted quickly provided continuous education and support to their students, demonstrating their ability to thrive under challenging circumstances.
  3. Seizing Opportunities: Being adaptable opens doors to new opportunities and career growth. For example, a marketing professional who embraces digital marketing techniques can explore new markets and customer segments, expanding their reach and impact. This flexibility can lead to new projects, promotions, and professional development.

Is Adaptability a talent or a skill?

Adaptability can be seen as both a talent and a skill. As a talent, some individuals naturally possess an inherent ability to adjust to new situations with ease, demonstrating a high level of emotional intelligence and cognitive flexibility. However, adaptability is also a skill that can be developed and honed over time through experiences, learning, and practice. By embracing challenges, seeking out new opportunities, and maintaining a growth mindset, individuals can enhance their capacity to adapt.

How do we develop Adaptability? Structured approach

Developing adaptability is essential for thriving in a constantly changing world. Here are five strategies to help cultivate this important skill:

  1. Embrace a Growth Mindset: Believe that you can improve and grow through effort and learning. This mindset encourages you to see challenges as opportunities rather than obstacles, making it easier to adapt to new situations.

How?: Each day, remind yourself, that every challenge is an opportunity to learn. When faced with a difficult situation, ask, “What can I learn from this?” and approach it with curiosity rather than frustration.

  1. Continuous Learning: Stay curious and committed to lifelong learning. Attend workshops, take online courses, read books, and stay updated with industry trends. This helps you stay relevant and ready to embrace new opportunities.

How?: Dedicate a few minutes each day to learning something new. It could be reading an article, watching a tutorial, or practicing a new skill. This consistent effort will keep your mind sharp and open to new ideas.

  1. Flexibility in Planning: While having a plan is important, be open to adjusting it as circumstances change. For example, if your career path takes an unexpected turn, be willing to explore new roles or industries that align with your skills and interests.

How?: Start your day with a flexible to-do list. While it’s important to have goals, be open to adjusting your priorities if unexpected tasks arise. Embrace the idea that plans can change, and that’s okay.

  1. Build Resilience: Develop emotional resilience by practicing mindfulness, stress management, and self-care. A resilient mindset helps you bounce back from setbacks and remain positive in the face of change.

How?: Incorporate mindfulness practices into your routine. Spend a few minutes meditating, doing deep-breathing exercises, or journaling about your day. These activities can help you stay calm and focused when faced with challenges.

  1. Seek Diverse Experiences: Step out of your comfort zone by trying new things and taking on diverse roles. This exposes you to different perspectives and challenges, enhancing your ability to adapt to various situations.

How?: Try to do something outside your comfort zone regularly. This could be as simple as taking a different route to work, trying a new hobby, or engaging in conversations with people from different backgrounds. These experiences will broaden your perspective and enhance your adaptability.

By integrating these strategies into your daily routine, you can strengthen your adaptability and be better prepared to navigate the dynamic, ever-changing world. This gradual development will ensure you remain flexible and ready to face new challenges effectively.
